Do my children need spanish?

"I thought most good colleges required two years of a foreign language for admission? (...) Spanish definitely seems to be the most useful second language to learn these days, however, considering the demographic shifts."

The above quotation posted in a homeschool forum is representative of a typical situation regarding education and foreign languages. Most people are not sure about the foreing language requirement that colleges demand for admission, and that is because it depends on the particular school. One thing is certain: the more years of a foreign languagethe better the student's application will look. Click HERE for more specifics.

BlueBell Homeschool Spanish curriculum provides a three year Spanish study program designed to fulfill the ability level that colleges require from High School graduates. Levels 1 and 2 concentrate on basic two year requirements, and Level 3 is directed to develop the grammar and communicative skills necessary for preparation of an Advanced Placement test.

BlueBell Homeschool Spanish Curriculum is based on The National Standards For Foreign Language established by ACTFL. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) is an internationally recognized authority on educational approaches to foreign languages. Besides providing a frame for research and methodology, one of their main objectives is to encourage the American government to promote FL programs. FL requirements in the USA are not as much of a priority as in the rest of Western countries, where at least one foreign language is mandatory for about 8-12 years of education.

The ACTFL standards work well for our Homeschool Spanish Curriculum because:

  • Spanish becomes active: students are motivated to use Spanish for communicative tasks.
  • Spanish cultural perspectives are incorporated through interactive activities.
  • Spanish language is a tool to connect to diverse contents.
  • BlueBell Homeschool Spanish program provides a point of reference and comparison to learn more about English as well.
  • BlueBell Homeschool Spanish curriculum is inspired on the objective of extending the learning of the language through interaction with other students and Spanish speakers. Our goal is to convey the concept of Spanish as a live and dynamic language that will always reward learners with growth.
